European Academies Science Advisory Council - EASAC, with the involvement of the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP). Developments in genetics are facilitating the predictive screening of disease. But tests for complex disorders, of questionable value, are being offered direct to consumers through the internet. This project, the first collaboration between the academies' networks EASAC and FEAM, aims to inform policy-makers and the public about the balance between encouraging responsible testing and protecting against unsound testing.

Nigerian Academy of Science, in partnership with the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) and the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS), and their respective Ministries of Health, this project is part of a long-term programme aimed at involving academies of health in national efforts to achieve the UN MDGs relating to maternal and child health. The intention is also to show the capacity of academies to convene relevant stakeholders working towards a national goal and thus underline the key role academies can play in providing scientific advice to their governments on this important issue.

The IAP General Assembly which met in Mexico City from 1-5 December has released five statements, signed by two-thirds majority of the IAP membership.
