IAP workshop announcement - 5-7 March 2003
Workshop: Capacity Building for Academies
Symposium: Science, Religion and Values
5-7 March 2003
Workshop: 5-6 March 2003
The aim of the workshop is to bring together the presidents of science academies and the ministers responsible for science and technology from 15 countries with predominantly Muslim communities to present and discuss the structure and functions of their academies of science and the ways and means of developing their capacities to fulfill their basic mission, including the provision of independent advice to governments. The workshop will provide an opportunity for these academies to discuss and share experiences on important issues of common concern. A similar workshop was held in May 2001 in Trieste involving academies of science in Africa.
Participants will also include a number of leading scientists from countries with no national science academies who will exchange views on how to set up national independent academies in their countries. Presidents of the Islamic Academy of Sciences, the Arab Academy of Sciences and the Arab Science and Technology Foundation will be invited to the workshop. In addition, presidents or representatives of a number of well-established academies will present the structure and functions of their academies and share their experiences.
Symposium: 7 March 2003
The workshop will be followed by a one-day symposium that examines the intricate relationship between science, religion and values that has always been a driving force both within and among civilizations. The symposium will also address the important role of academies in promoting a culture of excellence in science as an integral part of the cultural values of societies.
The events are organized by the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (IAP), in collaboration with the US National Academy of Sciences (US NAS), Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), Organization of Islamic Conference Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) and the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
The workshop and the symposium are co-sponsored by US NAS, ISESCO, COMSTECH and TWAS.
