Biography

Lai-Meng Looi is Malaysia’s inaugural Distinguished Professor. Born in Pahang, Malaysia in 1950, she studied medicine at the University of Singapore, trained in Surgical Pathology at the University of Malaya (UM), Royal Postgraduate Medical School (UK) and Brigham and Woman’s Hospital, Boston, USA. She defended her research doctorate at UM. In her 35-year academic career at UM, she has served as Head of Pathology, Deputy-Dean (Postgraduate), Member of the Malaysian Medical Council and Medical Research Committee Chair. She currently chairs the Medical Ethics (IRB) and Medical Advisory Committees of the UM Medical Centre complex. She is Founding Vice-President of the Association of Malaysian Medical Journal Editors and chairs the Committee on Ethics and Editorial Policies of the Asia-Pacific Association of Medical Editors. Her research interests are in amyloidosis, nephropathy and oncopathology. She is devoted to promoting a research and ethical culture among young scientists and regularly conducts writing workshops. She is an Examiner of both Royal Colleges of Pathologists, UK (RCPath) and Australasia (RCPA), Founding President of Malaysia’s College of Pathologists and Founding Fellow and Academician
of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. She was instrumental in establishing the National pathology laboratory accreditation standards, the Pathology Act and pathology practice reference guidelines for Malaysia. She has been honoured with Malaysia’s National Science Award, ASEAN Outstanding Scientist Award, Distinguished RCPA Fellow and Inaugural National Distinguished Professor. She is currently President of the World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (WASPaLM) and Co-Chair of the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP).
