ASSAf, the Academy of Science for South Africa,  hosted the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Fellowship Holders Regional Workshop on Scientific Writing and Science Communication on 19 to 22 August 2014. The workshop was targeted at 15 current postgraduate (PG) fellows based at institutions of higher learning in South Africa who are studying towards a doctorate or PhD qualification. Various scientific writing and science communication experts engaged with the PG fellows and the OWSD executive committee through practical exercises throughout the week. The key workshop objectives were to provide a platform for fellowship holders to network; provide an opportunity for fellowship holders to interact with OWSD international on their academic progress; and to communicate skills on scientific writing and science communication that are integral to their career growth. Some of the topics addressed were structuring a scientific paper, copyright and author’s rights, publishing, as well as writing for the general public.
