Biography

Dr Vidushi Neergheen-Bhujun is a senior lecturer in the Department of Health Sciences and ANDI Centre for Biomedical and Biomaterials Research at the Faculty of Science of the University of Mauritius. Vidushi’s research interests are centered around the safety and efficacy of phytotherapeutics and traditional medicines in the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases. She is currently investigating the cancer chemopreventive effects of bioactive extracts derived from food and medicinal plants indigenous to Mauritius. This is a pre-emptive approach to eliminate cells that are destined to become cancerous and is viewed as an appealing strategy for halting the progression of cancer. While this emerging field of cancer prevention through natural agents is promising, the targeted mechanisms of these agents need to be understood further. Vidushi’s research is genuinely interdisciplinary in that it interfaces very well with medicine, molecular biology and biochemistry.Vidushi has demonstrated a strong capacity to target communication to a wide range of audiences and has achieved research excellence in her field with more than 30 peer reviewed papers, 10 chapters in books, 2 peer reviewed conference proceedings and 25 conference abstracts and posters. She has an international reputation in this field, with many of her articles being highly cited.Vidushi is determined in finding locally optimized solutions for the prevention and management of cancer, a problem which is escalating in Mauritius and on the African continent with high number of new cancer cases. This research interest represents novel thinking in the field and looks at various parameters, namely how dietary/plant/marine extracts may influence a number of genetic and epigenetic events associated with several cancer processes involving DNA repair hormonal regulation, cell cycle, apoptosis and differentiation.  Moreover, to substantiate her belief and engagement in scientific networking and knowledge sharing, Vidushi is an active member of the Global Young Academy and a fellow of the African Science Leadership Program. In addition she is the secretary of the Society for Free Radical Research-Africa, a member of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research and a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition.
